"에베소 시민 여러분, 에베소가 위대한 아데미 여신의 신전과 하늘에서 내려온 그 신상을 지키는 곳이라는 것은 온 세상이 다 아는 사실입니다. 36 이것은 부인할 수 없는 사실이므로 시민 여러분은 마음을 가라앉히고 경솔한 행동은 삼가시기 바랍니다. 37 여러분은 이 사람들을 이리로 끌고 왔으나, 이 사람들은 우리 여신을 모욕한 적도 없고 그 신전에서 무엇을 훔치지도 않았습니다. 38 우리에게는 재판정이 있고 재판관들도 있습니다. 만약 데메드리오와 그의 직공들이 누구를 고소할 일이 있다면, 당사자들이 재판정으로 가서 옳고 그름을 가려야 할 것입니다. 39 그 밖에 여러분이 해결하고자 하는 문제가 있다면, 그것은 공식적인 모임에서 다루어야 할 것입니다. 40 이는 제가 이런 말을 하는 것은 아무런 이유도 없이 소동을 일으킨 책임이 우리에게 있다고 비난을 받을 위험이 있고, 또 이 소동에 대해 변명할 말이 없기 때문입니다." 41 그는 이렇게 말하고 모임을 해산시켰습니다.

35 The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: "Fellow Ephesians, doesn't all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? 36 Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash. 37 You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess. 38 If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges. 39 If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly. 40 As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it." 41 After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.
